Which dress for your body shape?

Mermaid, ball gown, sheath, bustier

Body-shape guides give pointers, but nothing replaces a fitting: a mermaid dress can surprise someone who thought they were « ball gown only ». A cut works through very concrete elements: waist placement, bodice support, skirt volume and vertical lines.

This guide helps you narrow your search before your appointment without boxing yourself into a category. Then refine at your fitting in Cannes and on our wedding dresses page.

Mermaid dress

The mermaid fits bust and hips, then usually flares around the knee or slightly above depending on the model. It creates a very defined line, appreciated for its sculptural effect.

Technically, everything depends on the balance between support and ease: if the flare starts too low, walking becomes difficult; if the fabric is too soft, the line loses its intention. Check stairs, dancing and sitting before deciding.

Ball gown

Ball gown

The ball gown relies on a clear contrast: fitted bodice, full skirt from the natural waist or sometimes slightly lower. Volume can come from tulle, organza, petticoats or several fabric layers.

It looks majestic in photos, but the volume should stay proportionate to the venue and your stature. In a small room, a very wide skirt may be less practical; in an estate or large hall, it has room to exist.

Sheath dress

Straight or slightly flared line, close without being bodycon. Chic, modern, often minimalist.

Suits those who love a clean silhouette. Flowing crepe is often more comfortable than stiff satin.

Bustier and shoulders

Bustiers structure the upper body; wide straps or sleeves add support. If you have narrow shoulders, a structured neckline or sleeves can balance the silhouette.

At your fitting, raise your arms and test hugs: support should stay comfortable all day.

Why the fitting decides
